Providing books to the deaf students of Dr. P.V. Datti Rotary School

CHAPTER - I: OVERVIEW
1.1    BACKGROUND

·         Initial Visit to the Community
As a partial requirement for the social innovation course our team surveyed a number of places for finding the issues of the society in Hubli and finally after some research and knowledge we found out social problems in Ramesh Bhavan and its surrounding areas, which we thought was a problem to be concerned of. Initially we were under an assumption that there was no such serious social issue in the area, but after visiting the schools in the area again we identified the Social Issue as “Lack of books in the Library of Dr. P.V Datti School for Deaf”.
The students of the school were unable to increase their knowledge from external sources due lack of books in the library.
This is a small problem which had a great impact on the intellectual development for students as it was a deaf school and the students needed to be provided with every facility which is being provided in any other school.
·         Details of interaction and observations
On our first visit to the school, we interacted with the staff and the principal .As the school is surrounded by other buildings area it is not known to many and does not get enough recognition. There we came to know that it faced many problems like lack of cultural exposure and no financial stability.
In the 2ndvisit to the school we found out that school could not co-operate with us as the exams were going on. So the principal requested us to donate some books for the school library.
Our key findings were that due to lack of financial stability resulted in under development of the library and no props for cultural activities.

·         Current Situations/Needs of the community
1.      Insufficient books in the library.
2.      Improper schooling facilities.
3.      Lack of opportunities to exhibit their talents.

·         Key findings
The school lacks financial stability as result they cannot afford basic things like props for cultural activities and books for library.  Due to lack of props they are not able perform the cultural activities properly. And lack of books leads to restricted and conservative study.
1.2                        Social Issue

·         Details of problem/s identified for the intervention
Our team has pointed out many problems but the social issue identified by us is Lack of books in the Library of Dr. P.V Datti School for Deaf”. We have taken up this as our main issue, as it is necessary that every school should be provided with library.
The benefits of having library are:
1.      Easy, free access to thousands of books.
2.      Access to educational resources that can be used for school purposes.
3.      A safe, warm, comforting environment that one can go to quietly read, to work.

·         Details of stakeholder
Stakeholder consists of two parts where one part consists of the people who are affected by the cause and the other people who want to help for the cause.
1.      The school students are the ones who are affected by this.
2.      The school management can contact the NGOs and try to expand the library.
3.      The people nearby the school can donate the books to the school.
4.      Government should make sure that the special schools are provided with basic facilities.

1.3 Conclusion
As our team has surveyed Dr. P.V. Datti Rotary School for some time we found that library was quite essential for the students.
In captions the community was majorly found with
1.      Lack of proper financial stability.
2.      No sufficient books in the library.
3.      The school requires an audiometer.
4.      It also requires props for conducting cultural activities.
